Can I login without creating a EU Login account?

Valid for

EU Login offers the possibility to authenticate using an eID (electronic ID) to access European Commission applications without having to create a specific EU Login account.

Important Update:
Authentication via social media will be discontinued by the end of 2025.
To ensure continued access to applications, users who previously relied on social media login will need to either:
• create an EU Login account and/or
• link their eID to an EU Login account

Note 1: Applications may choose not to offer eID login options.

Note 2: The eID option is only available for participating EU Member States.

As explained in Note 1 above, not all applications allow authentication with an EU Login eID identity. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to create an EU Login account and then add your eID to it before accessing Commission applications.

About eIDs and “virtual accounts”

When you authenticate using your eID directly from the EU Login page without having an EU Login account, EU Login automatically creates a virtual account linked to that eID.
This virtual account can receive access rights or store application-related information, depending on how the applications you visit manage user data.

However, we do not recommend using this mechanism.
A virtual account is temporary and not intended for long-term use.

If you later create an EU Login account and link your eID to it, EU Login performs a process known as reconciliation:

  • your eID becomes part of your EU Login account, and
  • the previous virtual account is permanently deleted.

Warning: After reconciliation, any access rights or application-specific information that existed only in the virtual account will not be transferred to your EU Login account and may be lost.

To avoid this risk, always:

  • Create an EU Login account first, and
  • Add your eID to that account before accessing applications.
