How can I add my eID to my EU Login account

Depending on your country's participation in EU digital initiatives, you may be able use your national electronic identity as a second factor for logging in with EU Login. This article will help you set it up.

Please refer to the EU Login User Guide or the below video, and follow attentively the procedure.

The procedure described in the video is summarised hereafter for your convenience:

  1. Connect your eID to your computer using a card reader first. Alternatively you may use a National eID mobile application e.g. ITSME for Belgian eID
  2. Log into your EU Login account using your any second factor you already have configured, else use only your password
  3. On the top right corner, click the cogwheel next to your name and select "My Account"
  4. Navigate to the options "Manage my eIDs" > "Link my eID" where you will be presented with all compatible eID countries' flags, and select your country's flag. If your country's flag is not in the list, this unfortunately means you will not be able to set this authentication method.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions as you are being redirected through the eIDAS website and your country's identity provider system to establish the link

Once linked, your eID can be used from the very first EU Login screen, authenticating your directly with the two-factor authentication.

It is however important to note that you may use the eID with EU Login before linking it to your account but this may cause issue afterwards as it will create what is called a "virtual account" which has a very limited set of features. Please refer to this article in case you face any access issues after having added your eID to your existing account: I linked my eID to another EU Login account and I cannot access my saved data anymore
